Key ingredients
This section reviews the best ingredients and substitutions for this recipe. For an exact list of ingredients and quantities, check the recipe card below.
- Chicken Wings - I buy a package of "party wings" from our local Costco. The wings are already separated into two pieces and the tip has been removed. Most grocery stores sell wings. You may have to separate them.
- Seasonings - Garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Change things up by using smoked paprika for a bit more smoky flavor.
- BBQ Sauce - Use your favorite BBQ sauce.
- Honey - Adds just a bit more sweetness
- Red Pepper Flakes - I like to add a bit more spice to my sauce so I add red pepper flakes. Feel free to omit or add double the amount! It's all about how spicy you like your wings!
Making honey bbq wings
In this section, I share step-by-step photos, cooking methods, techniques, and a general overview. For detailed instructions, temperatures, and timing, check the printable recipe card below.
- Pat wings dry with a paper towel and place wings in a large bowl
- Drizzle oil and seasonings over the top of the wings. Toss to mix so every part of the wing is covered
- Place wings on a baking rack that's resting on a baking sheet
- Bake for 40 minutes, rotating wings halfway through
- Meanwhile, place BBQ sauce, honey, and red pepper flakes in a small saucepan. Heat over low heat until the honey has melted
- Remove wings from oven and place into a large bowl
- Pour BBQ sauce over wings and toss to coat
- Place wings back on the rack and return to oven under the broiler until the sauce is bubbly and just slightly charred
- Serve wings hot or warm with a sprinkling of fresh parsley
Recipe tips
- Pat the wings dry with a paper towel. Excess moisture will prevent the wings from crisping
- Use parchment paper or foil on your baking sheet. This makes cleaning up much easier.
- You can also bake these wings directly on parchment paper and omit the baking rack. I've tested the wings both ways and both work well!
- Check your wings after 40 minutes of baking. If the skin isn't crispy, give the wings another 5 minutes in the oven.
- When broiling, keep a close eye on your wings. You don't want them burnt, but you do want them just slightly charred. I use a gas oven and my broiler is just in the center of my oven. I have to rotate my tray to make certain all the wings get heated from the broiler.
- You can skip the broiler if you prefer your BBQ sauce very wet and not slightly caramelized
Frequently asked questions

Yes, leftovers can be reheated. Place on a baking sheet and in a 350°F oven for 10-15 minutes. Wings can also be microwaved, but they do lose some of their crispness.
