Chicken wings on the grill
I love making and eating wings. The size of a wing is perfect for nibbling and because they are small they have a large amount of meat to seasoning. I have several recipes for baked chicken wings, but I thought it was time to share my recipes for wings on the grill too.
During the hot days of summer, I have no desire to turn on my oven, but I still crave the great taste of wings. The wings are simply seasoned and once are cooked, they get layers of BBQ sauce.
These wings are so tasty all year, but not everyone can access their grill during the winter. I have an Oven-Baked BBQ Wing version if you don't want to get outside.
Ingredients for BBQ wings
- Chicken Wings - You can either use the whole wing or use wings that have been cut into wingettes and drumettes. I often buy a package of party wings that are separated.
- BBQ Sauce - Use your favorite sauce.
- Seasoning - Salt, pepper and garlic powder.
How to make BBQ wings
- Pat wings down with a paper towel removing any excess moisture.
- Sprinkle wings with salt, pepper and garlic powder.
- Place wings on a preheated and seasoned grill and cook over medium to medium-high heat.
- Cook for 3-5 minutes on each side until wings are cooked through.
- Baste BBQ sauce over the top of the wings. Flip over and place sauce on the other side. Close lid and cook for 2-3 minutes letting the sauce begin to cook and caramelize.
- Flip wings and apply another layer of sauce. Close lid and cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Apply at least 2 coats of sauce to each side.
- Remove from heat and eat hot or while still warm.
Recipe tips
- Dry the Wings: Be certain to pat the wings dry before beginning.
- Preheat the Grill: Give your grill ample time to heat up. If you have a thermometer on your grill, you want it between 415-450°F.
- Flip Often: Flip your wings every 3-5 minutes so the wings don't burn. If you have a hot spot on your grill, rotate the wings so they all cook evenly.
- Use a Digital Thermometer: Make certain the wings are fully cooked to at least 165°F.
- Let the Sauce Cook: Give your sauce ample time to cook. It will thicken and caramelize while it heats up.
