Cheese and Ham Biscuits next to a bowl of tomato soup.

Easy Ham and Cheese Biscuits that are light and tender with bits of ham and cheese baked right inside! This is an easy-to-make biscuit ready to eat in just 30 minutes and there's no rolling out the dough.

Perfect for a grab-and-go breakfast or lunch!

Drop biscuits with ham and cheese

These easy-to-make drop biscuits can be ready in just 30 minutes. You don't need to roll out the dough or use a biscuit cutter.

Once the dough is made, you use an ice cream scoop or two large spoons to drop mounds of dough onto a cookie sheet! It really couldn't be any easier!

Ham and Cheese Biscuits are perfect for breakfast or lunch! How often does that happen? I originally made these biscuits for breakfast and they were perfect along with a couple of eggs.

They'd be just as delicious alongside a bowl of Broccoli Soup or Enchilada Soup.

Or maybe into a mini sandwich - filled with slices of deli ham and cheddar cheese! A ham and cheese sandwich on a ham and cheese biscuit!

I think these would also be delicious for a picnic lunch along with fresh fruit, chunks of cheese, and strawberry jam!

    Key ingredients

Small bowls filled with butter, ham, cheese and flour.

This section reviews the best ingredients and substitutions for this recipe. For an exact list of ingredients and quantities, check the recipe card below.

    • Flour - all purpose flour
    • Butter - salted butter cut into small pieces
    • Sour cream - regular sour cream works best (not light or reduced fat)
    • Cheese - shredded cheddar or use your favorite shredded cheese
    • Ham - cut into small cubes. Use leftover ham or ham from the deli

How to make ham and cheese biscuits

    • In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugar and salt.
    • Add butter and mix into the flour mixture using a pastry blender or your fingers. Mixture should be crumbly looking.
    • Add ham and cheddar cheese.

Shredded cheddar cheese and small cubed ham in a white bowl.
    • In a separate bowl, mix sour cream and milk together. Add to flour mixture. Stir just until combined. The mixture should be sticky.

    Biscuit variations

    • Omit ham if desired
    • Substitute ham for finely chopped salami or pepperoni
    • Use your favorite type of cheese - pepper jack, colby, gouda
    • Add finely chopped green onions
    • Sprinkle a bit of shredded parmesan cheese on the top of each biscuit before baking

    Biscuit baking tips

    • Use cold butter
    • Stir dough just until mixed
    • Handle dough as little as possible - overworking can cause the biscuits to become tough
    • Make certain oven is fully preheated
    • Store cooled biscuits in the refrigerator

    Recipe FAQs

These were the worst biscuits ever. They didn’t bake well and tasted terrible. Don’t waste your time or money on these.

Amazing! I'm thinking maybe something went wrong with your baking because if you like ham and if you like cheese and if you love biscuits, these are quite delicious! So sorry these didn't work for you. Several readers have had much success and love them.

Interesting. They are quite a hit with most people. If they didn't bake well, I'm wondering if you changed the recipe or if your oven temperature might be off. Also, be careful how you measure your flour. It's easy to get too much flour if you don't use a fluff and scoop method. I'm sorry you didn't care for them.

Could these be mixed up and then frozen before baked? They look delicious!

        Hi Lisa,
I have not frozen these with raw dough and then baked later. I don't know how they'd turn out.

        Hi Alice,
No, but the biscuits won't be quite the same. I have only made the biscuits as written. You could try substituting buttermilk, but you'll need to use less than the amount of sour cream.

This is so simple and very moist recipe. My boys gobbled these up as a snack. I'm trying to use up a lot of leftover ham. Next time I might add jalapenos for myself. Thanks for the recipe!

I have the same trouble in my house with my boys gobbling everything up before I even get to it! Jalapenos sounds like a tasty addition!

I love a good drop biscuit! I don't mind rolling out dough and doing the whole nine yards thing...but drop biscuits are just a thing of beauty. The way the little bits get nice and crispy on top? Oh yeah! I love the ham and cheese version here, Kathy! And I must admit that I'm still laughing at the 'A ham and cheese sandwich on a ham and cheese biscuit!' comment. You're right though...those would be delicious! 🙂
