Why this appetizer works
The crunch of the bread, the tang of the goat cheese, and the sweetness of the onions make a delicious combination.
This easy-to-make appetizer is perfect for when you want a simple, yet elegant appetizer to serve to guests or just spoil yourself.
If you want to mix things up a bit, these would also work well with sauteed morel mushrooms on top of the goat cheese!
Key ingredients
- French Bread - a good loaf of crusty French bread works best. Sourdough is also a good option.
- Goat Cheese - pick your favorite
- Caramelized Onions - make your own ahead of time
Step by step directions
- Slice the bread into ½-inch slices and spread olive oil on both sides
- Bake in a 450° oven for 5-7 minutes. You do not need to flip the bread. The bottom will be toasted just fine.
- Allow toast to cool to room temperature
- Spread a layer of goat cheese on top
- Top with caramelized onions
- Sprinkle a bit of sea salt and freshly chopped parsley on top
Substitutions and variations
- Toast bread outside on a grill over medium-high heat. Keep a close eye on the bread because it can burn quickly
- Use herbed cream cheese in place of the goat cheese
- Add pepper jelly or an onion jam in place of the caramelized onions
- Add a bit of fresh thyme instead of fresh parsley
Recipe tips
- Choose a smaller baguette style of French bread. The smaller size is perfect for appetizers
- Caramelized onions are best if they are warmed just slightly
- Keep a close eye on your bread. You don't want it to burn
- Bread can be toasted ahead of time. Allow to fully cool and store in an airtight storage container or bag.

I love the idea of gobbling down these crostini outside, but why can't I envision my children delivering them on a tray? Ohhhhh. I think I know why. Anything with caramelized onions wins my heart, every time. They always get eaten no matter how much I make! Go figure.

We will just have to serve you a BIG bowl of caramelized onions then!
