Why this appetizer works

The crunch of the bread, the tang of the goat cheese and the sweetness of the onions makes a delicious combination.

This easy to make appetizer is perfect for when you want a simple, yet elegant appetizer to serve to guest or just spoil yourself.

If you want to mix things up a bit, these would also work well with sauteed morel mushrooms on top of the goat cheese!

Key ingredients

Caramelized onions in a small bowl next to a log of goat cheese and a loaf of bread.
  • French Bread - a good loaf of crusty french bread works best. Sourdough is also a good option.
  • Goat Cheese - pick your favorite
  • Caramelized Onions - make your own ahead of time

Step by step directions

  • Slice the bread into ½ inch slices and spread olive oil on both sides
Brushing olive oil onto sliced bread.
  • Bake in a 450° oven for 5-7 minutes. You do not need to flip the bread. The bottom will be toasted just fine.

  • Allow toast to cool to room temperature
  • Spread a layer of goat cheese on top

  • Top with caramelized onions

  • Sprinkle a bit of sea salt and freshly chopped parsley on top

Substitutions and variations

  • Toast bread outside on a grill over medium high heat. Keep a close eye on the bread because it can burn quickly
  • Use an herbed cream cheese in place of the goat cheese
  • Add a pepper jelly or an onion jam in place of the caramelized onions
  • Add a bit of fresh thyme instead of fresh parsley

Recipe tips

  • Choose a smaller baguette style of french bread. The smaller size is perfect for appetizers
  • Caramelized onions are best if they are warmed just slightly
  • Keep a close eye on your bread. You don't want it to burn
  • Bread can be toasted ahead of time. Allow to fully cool and store in an airtight storage container or bag.

I love Crostini. And this one with goat cheese sounds amazing, Kathy. And caramelized onions on top is just beyond YUM! I wish I could have at least 3-4 crostini right now. 🙂

I love the idea of gobbling down these crostini outside, but why can't I envision my children delivering them on a tray? Ohhhhh. I think I know why. Anything with caramelized onions wins my heart, every time. They always get eaten no matter how much I make! Go figure.
