Homemade taco seasoning
If you like to make tacos, or use taco seasoning, then this is the recipe for you! This easy to make spice blend replaces any store bought package you might use.
Make up a large batch so you have it available for quick easy dinners. Package up a batch and give away as gifts.
This recipe is flexible and can be adjusted to your liking - increase the chili powder, reduce the salt or add a bit more cumin or a bit more spice with red chili flakes. Of course, this mixture is also perfect just the way it's written too!
There's no added sugar, starch or other fillers in this mixture. Most store bought packages contain all those extras that just aren't needed for pure delicious flavor!
Key ingredients
- Chili Powder
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder
- Ground Cumin
- Ground Oregano - or oregano flakes
- Smoked Paprika - can also use regular paprika
- Salt
Step by step directions
- Measure out all spices into a bowl
- Use a whisk or spoon and mix to combine
- Use right away or store in an airtight container
To use
- 2-3 tablespoons of this spice mixture is used in place of one packet - or use 2-3 tablespoons for every pound of ground beef or chicken. The amount varies on how strong you like your meat seasoned.
- Brown your ground meat first, drain off any grease then add the taco seasoning along with ¼ cup of water. Mix well and cook until the water is absorbed.
- Use in any recipe calling for taco seasoning
Recipe tips
- Use fresh jars of dried herbs and spices. Spices and herbs lose their potency after a while so for the most flavor, use newly opened jars or packages.
- Store taco seasoning in an airtight container in your pantry or cupboard
- If you like a bit of sweetness, you can add a teaspoon of sugar to the mixture
- Add red chili flakes if you like a bit more heat or reduce chili powder if you'd like a bit milder
Recipe Faqs
When stored in an airtight container, homemade taco seasoning will last up to a year.
Most packets of store bought seasoning contain one ounce of taco seasoning which is about 2 tablespoons of homemade seasoning.
Recipes using taco seasoning
- Black bean taco cups
- Black bean flautas
- Burrito bowls
- Turkey tortilla soup
- Fajita casserole - can use taco seasoning in place of the fajita seasoning

We use taco seasoning quite a bit! I typically prefer to make my own spice mixes - they taste so much better than the store-bought versions. I can't wait to try your taco seasoning. It is Tuesday today...tacos maybe? 🙂 Happy New Year to you and your family, Kathy!
