I know you've had them. Those delicious crunchy, cheesy mozzarella sticks you can order in almost any restaurant. They make a perfect appetizer or snack anytime of the day or night.

What ingredients do I need to make Mozzarella Sticks?

    • Mozzarella string cheese
    • Eggs
    • Flour
    • Panko bread crumbs
    • Oil for frying

I've made a couple of different versions of cheese sticks and now I think I've got a perfect recipe - double dipping the cheese sticks in egg, flour, egg and then bread crumbs makes a nice coating.

A plate with crunch cheese and one stick being dunked into a red sauce.

A few tips to keep in mind when making Cheese Sticks

    • Use panko bread crumbs
    • Use a double dip breading system - first egg, then flour, then egg then panko bread crumbs
    • Freeze dipped cheese sticks for 1-2 hours
    • Fry at 375 degrees  - make certain your oil is preheated
    • Drain cooked cheese sticks on a paper towel
    • Enjoy while still hot or warm
    • Serve with your favorite marinara sauce

    Ingredients

    • 12 Mozzarella cheese sticks
    • 2 eggs (beaten)
    • ½ cup flour
    • 1 ½ cups Panko bread crumbs (Italian seasoning)
    • Oil for frying

    Sauce

    • ½ cup marinara sauce

    Instructions

    • Unwrap cheese sticks. Blot with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture.
      12 Mozzarella cheese sticks
    • Set up three bowls: eggs, flour, bread crumbs
2 eggs, ½ cup flour, 1 ½ cups Panko bread crumbs
    • Place a piece of parchment paper on a baking sheet
    • Working with one cheese stick at a time, dip into egg, then into the flour, then back into the egg and finally into the bread crumbs. Press bread crumbs firmly onto cheese stick making certain all areas are covered.  Place on baking sheet.
    • Freeze cheese sticks for 1-2 hours until they are fully frozen.
    • Pour oil into a pan. You will need at least two inches of oil. Heat oil to 375 degrees.
    • Place 3-4 cheese sticks in hot oil. Cook for 2-3 minutes until nicely browned. Remove from oil and place on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
    • Serve hot with marinara sauce.

I made this recipes using mozzarella pearls as an hors d'oeuvre for a cocktail party. They were super cute and pop-able and so delicious they were gone in a flash. They took a little more work because of the size and the amount I was creating but worth it when my guests were enjoying them drizzled with marinara.

      Questions:
How long can the sticks before stored in the freezer before you cook them? Days, weeks or months.

You could freeze these for up to 1 month and then use.

Look at that gooey mozzarella! I agree on the double dipping before frying, and also the use of the panko crumbs which make for a crunchier texture. They look like a winner!

These look absolutely perfect, not to mention COMPLETELY irresistible! My husband used to say that he "didn't like" mozzarella sticks...but it turned out that what he really meant was, "If you order mozzarella sticks, I will eat all of them, so I'll pretend I don't like them." I've never made them at home, but I'm sure they'd be gone in a flash!

My husband often says he's not that hungry and orders an appetizer and a salad and then he eats all of our leftovers! To be safe you'd better make a double batch!

Excellent mozzarella sticks tips here, Kathy! Laura was just telling me a couple of weeks ago that I should make homemade mozzarella sticks. I haven't gotten around to it yet, but I hope to someday. In the meantime, I'm just going to drool over these photos. You nailed it! 🙂 These would be a great snack while watching World Cup games. Yum!
