Cheesesteak sandwich
These chicken philly cheesesteak sandwiches are so filling and delicious! They are perfect for quick weeknight dinners and hearty lunches.
I know these aren't a traditional philly sandwich. I mean, there's no steak and I've used provolone cheese. But we call these chicken phillies or chicken cheesesteak sandwiches in our house.
If you think they just can't be called a philly sandwich, go ahead and call them a chicken sandwich with peppers and onions!
No matter what these sandwiches are called, they are delicious. They are filled with lots of juicy chicken and sauteed peppers and onions all piled on a hearty roll.
Key ingredients
- Chicken - I used boneless, skinless chicken breasts. You could also use thighs
- Bell peppers - Red, yellow or orange are my favorites
- Onions - I used a yellow onion, but a white onion works too
- Cheese - Provolone, pepper jack or even cheddar. Pick a cheese you love!
- Roll - Crusty roll is my preference, but I've also used soft hoagie rolls
Step by step directions
- Saute peppers and onions in a large pan with a bit of oil
- Add chicken and seasoning
- Cook until chicken is cooked through
- Place cheese on top and cook for an additional minute until cheese is melted
- Place filling on a crusty roll spread with mayo
- Serve hot
Recipe tips
- Slice peppers and onions about the same thickness
- Slice chicken into ½ inch strips
- You can toast the inside of your buns if you prefer. Slice open buns and place in a preheated 400°F oven for 3-5 minutes until buns are slightly toasted
- Feel free to omit the bun altogether and just enjoy on a plate and eat with a fork!

You had me at cheesesteak! The combo of onions, peppers and cheese is a good base for deliciousness no matter what type of meat you use. I bet you could add a spoonful of marinara to this, too!
