Limeade

Limeade is a super refreshing drink similar to lemonade, but made with limes instead. It's a nice change from the popular lemonade.

On a recent trip for  a soccer tournament my son picked up a bottle of sparkling limeade at an organic market. It was delicious and so refreshing. I had to recreate that bubbly drink as soon as we  came home.

This drink is a bit on the tart side and that's just how I like it. I tend to like things on the tart side like in lime sherbet and rhubarb crisp. If you like it a bit sweeter, feel free to add a bit more sugar.

Sparkling limeade is a beverage made with fresh squeezed lime juice, sugar and carbonated or sparkling water.

Ingredients

Fresh limes, sugar and a bottle of sparkling water.
  • Limes - use fresh squeezed lime juice. You'll need a ¼ cup of lime juice which is about 2 large limes.
  • Sugar - granulated sugar
  • Sparkling water - Look for sparkling water, not soda water. Use an unflavored water for this recipe.

Step by step directions

  • Squeeze limes into a large measuring cup.
  • Add sugar and stir until sugar dissolves. This may take a minute, but you want the sugar fully dissolved before adding the sparkling water.
  • Fill a glass with ice.
  • Pour lime mixture over ice and then add sparkling water.
  • Stir well and garnish with a lime wedge.

Recipe tips

  • Make certain the sugar has fully dissolved in the lime juice. Just keep stirring and it will dissolve. You can also let it sit for a minute and then come back to it and stir again.
  • Use fresh squeezed lime juice. Bottled lime juice just doesn't taste the same.
  • If you prefer your limeade a bit sweeter, add an additional tablespoon of sugar. It will take a bit longer to dissolve the additional sugar.
  • Serve right away so the sparkling water still has the carbonation.
  • Recipe can be doubled or tripled to serve the amount you need.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use plain water instead of sparkling water in the sparkling limeade?

Of course you can add plain water. You'll just have regular limeade instead of sparkling limeade! Still delicious even without the bubbles.

Can I use other citrus juice instead of lime juice?

Yes! This would be delicious using fresh squeezed lemon juice, orange juice or grapefruit juice.

How long will sparkling limeade last?

Due to the carbonation, you'll want to enjoy this beverage right away.

What a fun idea to make your own sparkling limeade! We drink a lot of sparkling water in our house, but it's typically in cans. I'll have to try making my own sometime! Limes are the perfect flavor for summer, too!
