Homemade lemonade
Lemonade is one of those beverages that's easy to make and so refreshing. When my kids were growing up, I made homemade lemonade all the time. Then they discovered fruit lemonades, and that meant I had to step up my lemonade game!
Fruit lemonades seem to make the lemonade fancier and add a fun, flavorful twist. This watermelon lemonade uses fresh pureed watermelon that's strained, leaving you with a smooth watermelon juice.
The watermelon juice gives this lemonade its beautiful pink color and fresh watermelon flavor. Combined with freshly squeezed lemon juice, it's a refreshing drink that's perfect for hot summer days.
Key ingredients

- Watermelon - Select a ripe, flavorful watermelon. I usually select a seedless one, but a seeded one will work too.
- Lemons - Use freshly squeezed lemons for the best flavor. I don't care for the taste of bottled lemon juice, and won't use it in lemonade.
- Sugar - Granulated sugar is used to sweeten the lemonade. I like my lemonade on the tart side, but you can always add more sugar to make it sweeter.
- Water - I don't count this as an ingredient, but you'll need to add water to your lemonade.
Making watermelon lemonade

- Combine lemon juice and sugar in a large container or pitcher. Stir and let sit for 5-10 minutes until the sugar is fully dissolved.

- Cut watermelon into chunks and place in a blender.
- Puree until smooth.

- Pour pureed watermelon into a fine-meshed sieve over a large bowl to strain off the juice.

- Pour watermelon juice and cold water into the pitcher with the lemon juice. Stir to combine.
- Serve with ice.
- Refrigerate watermelon lemonade and use within 3-4 days. Stir before pouring.
Recipe tips
- If using a seeded watermelon, remove the black seeds before blending.
- This lemonade is on the tart side. If you prefer a sweeter lemonade, add ¼ cup more sugar.
- Make certain the sugar is completely dissolved in the lemon juice before adding the other ingredients. This will take 5-10 minutes.
- If you're short on time, you can dissolve the sugar in a cup of water in a pan on the stove. Remove as soon as the sugar has dissolved. Add to a pitcher and then add cold water. Finally, add your juices.
- This lemonade separates as it sits. Just stir before pouring.
- If adding ice to the pitcher of lemonade, reduce the amount of water added by ½ cup. This helps prevent the lemonade from becoming watered down.
