Imagine the delight of sinking your teeth into a decadent treat topped with a rich and creamy Oreo buttercream. This frosting takes your favorite childhood cookie and transforms it into a luxurious spread that pairs perfectly with cakes, cupcakes, and even cookies. Its velvety texture and sweet, slightly crunchy bits of Oreo make every bite a delightful experience.
Creating this Oreo buttercream is surprisingly simple, yet the results are nothing short of spectacular. With just a few ingredients and minimal effort, you can whip up a batch of this indulgent frosting that will impress family and friends. The combination of classic buttercream and the beloved taste of Oreos creates a frosting that's both nostalgic and irresistible.
Whether you're looking to elevate your next batch of cupcakes or add a special touch to a homemade cake, this Oreo buttercream is the perfect choice. Its creamy consistency spreads smoothly, making it ideal for both novice and experienced bakers. Plus, the familiar flavor of Oreos will bring smiles to anyone who takes a bite, making your baked goods the star of any gathering.
This frosting is perfect for adding to Oreo cupcakes, but it is also delicious on chocolate mayonnaise cupcakes.
If you have any leftover frosting, don't let it go to waste! My dad's favorite treat is to spread any leftover frosting between two graham crackers. It makes a perfect little snack.
Oreo buttercream ingredients
- Oreo cookies - or other chocolate cream-filled cookies. Use the whole cookie, with the filling. Use Oreo brand or your favorite brand of chocolate cream-filled cookies.
- Mini Oreo cookies - used as a garnish. These are often found where you buy individual bags (lunch box size) of cookies and snacks.
- Powdered sugar - if lumpy, be certain to sift first
- Butter - salted butter at room temperature
- Vanilla - use the very best vanilla here
- Cream - heavy cream or half-and-half cream
Making Oreo buttercream
- Break cookies into pieces and place in a food processor. Puree until no chunks remain.
- Place softened butter into a mixing bowl. Mix well until smooth and creamy.
- Add powdered sugar and mix. The mixture will be very thick.
- Add vanilla and then add cream a bit at a time until the desired consistency is met.
- Fold in finely ground oreos
- Add ½ tablespoon additional cream if needed
- Spread or pipe onto cake or cupcakes
Oreo frosting recipe tips
- Make certain butter is soft, but not melted
- Use the whisk attachment to mix the buttercream
- If powdered sugar is lumpy, be certain to sift through a fine mesh sieve
- Add a bit of additional cream to make the frosting the desired consistency
- Frosting can be covered and refrigerated until needed. Make certain you allow frosting to return to room temperature before spreading or piping.
- If piping, make certain to fully crush cookies. Any chunks will clog your piping bag.
- If spreading frosting with a knife, larger chunks of cookies may be used
- If piping, use a coupler along with a large open tip to make certain the frosting flows easily. If the tip does become clogged, simply remove the coupler and tip and then remove the blockage. Replace the tip and continue piping.
- Small Oreo cookies can be used as a garnish or you can sprinkle a bit of additional cookie crumbs over the top of the frosting.
Frequently asked questions
No, Oreo buttercream frosting does not need to be refrigerated. However, if your kitchen is very warm, the frosting may become too soft and begin to weep.
Yes, you can add chunks as long as you aren't piping the frosting. The larger chunks will clog the piping tip.
Frosting the cupcakes
When frosting the cupcakes you can use a piping bag with a wide tip. I use either a Wilton #1M or a 6B. I find a wider tip works better just in case there's a larger piece of cookie that was mixed into the frosting.
For a darker frosting
If you prefer a darker, more chocolatey frosting, you can double the amount of Oreo cookies added to the frosting. The buttercream will need additional cream after adding the cookie crumbs.
