Ham and Swiss cheese sliders
The combination of ham and Swiss cheese is a winning match. These sliders remind me of one of my favorite Baked Ham and Cheese Sandwiches, the "ham on bun" sandwiches my mom always made when I was growing up and still makes today.
These sliders use many of the same ingredients, but they are made in mini form. Instead of building individual sandwiches, the ingredients are layered onto the bottom half of the rolls, making assembly quick and easy.
Key ingredients

- Hawaiian Rolls - These have the best taste, but any small roll will work. Make certain the rolls are attached to each other. You don't want individual rolls.
- Sliced Ham - I like to use thinly sliced deli ham. Any type will do. I often use honey ham.
- Cheese - I typically use Swiss cheese, but you can also use cheddar, gouda, provolone, or any sliced cheese.
- Butter - Use regular, salted butter. This will be slathered across the top of the buns along with the dried parsley and garlic powder.
- Mayo Spread- This is a mixture of mayonnaise, Dijon, honey, and a bit of white wine vinegar.
Making ham and cheese sliders

- Combine mayo, Dijon, honey, and vinegar together.
- Slice rolls in half horizontally, without separating the rolls.
- Spread the mayo mixture over both halves of the rolls.

- On the bottom half of the rolls, layer slices of ham and then top with cheese.
- Add the top half of the rolls.
- Place in a lightly greased baking dish.

- Melt butter in a saucepan or in the microwave. Stir in parsley and garlic powder.
- Brush the butter over the top of the rolls.
- Cover the sliders with foil and place in a preheated 350°F oven for 25 minutes.
- Remove foil and continue baking for another 5-10 minutes until the center of the sliders are hot and the cheese is melted.

- Let rest for 2-3 minutes, then remove sliders from the pan and place on a large cutting board.
- Use a large chef's knife and cut through the seams of the rolls to cut into individual sliders.
- Serve hot or warm.
Tips for ham and Swiss sliders
- Keep the rolls connected when slicing and assembling. This makes layering easy and helps everything bake evenly.
- Use thinly sliced ham and cheese so the sliders heat through quickly and every bite has a good balance.
- Don’t skip covering with foil for the first part of baking. It helps the cheese melt without over-browning the tops.
- Add the butter topping just before baking so the rolls don’t become soggy while sitting.
- Let the sliders rest for a few minutes after baking before cutting. This helps the cheese set slightly and makes them easier to separate.
- Cut along the roll lines to quickly create neat, even sliders.
Frequently asked questions
You can assemble the sliders ahead of time. Cover and refrigerate up to 24 hours before baking. Wait to add the butter to the top of the buns until just before baking. You may need to increase the baking time by 5 minutes to allow the chilled sliders to fully heat through.
You can freeze the assembled sliders before baking or freeze leftovers after baking. Wrap well and thaw in the refrigerator before adding the butter to the top of the buns. Bake as directed.
