Colorful and fun monster cupcakes are perfect for a Halloween party or a birthday party! Anyone who loves monsters will fall in love with these adorable cupcakes.
Pick your favorite colors and have some fun!
These monsters are as cute as can be and were fun to make too. My kids are too old to go trick or treating on Halloween, but they still love all the Halloween treats.
They are perfect for a Halloween party or buffet, but they'd also be great for a birthday party or an end-of-the-school-year party along with a scoop of Cookie Monster Ice Cream!
I made them in fun vibrant colors, but you could choose your favorite colors.
Another fun version of these monster cupcakes is these Cookie Monster Cupcakes!
What you'll need
- Cupcakes - Make your favorite - some to try are chocolate mayonnaise, lemon cupcakes, pumpkin spice, chocolate chip or buy unfrosted cupcakes from your local store.
- Frosting - I used this buttercream recipe, but you could also use a lemon buttercream or a pumpkin spice buttercream.
- Gel Coloring - Gel food coloring adds a vibrant color and won't dilute your buttercream. I used Royal Blue, Orange, Violet, Kelly Green, and Lemon Yellow. You can buy the colors individually or you can buy a set of gel food coloring.
- Decorating Bags - For these monster cupcakes, I used disposable plastic decorating bags because I wanted to use a variety of colors all at once and I didn't have enough reusable bags. Either works fine.
- Tips - My favorites for these cupcakes were the grass tip #233, the star tip #12 and the round tip #2.
- Couplers - These allow you to easily switch tips.
- Candy Eye decorations - Large Candy Eyes, Small Candy Eyes.
Mix the colors
- Decide how many colors you'd like to use
- Divide your frosting into equal size portions
- Use a toothpick and dip one end into gel colors. Drag toothpick across top of frosting. Stir and test color. If more color is needed, repeat with a new toothpick.
Fill the bags
Filling the bags can be a messy process, but I have a few tricks that make the job easier!
- Cut the tip off the bag. Cut a little off at a time until a coupler can fit inside the bag, just poking through the tip. Once you have one bag cut to the appropriate size, you can use that bag as a guide to cut the other bags.
- Insert the coupler into the inside of the bag. Add a tip to the outside of the coupler/bag and screw on the top to hold the tip in place. The tip can be added after the bag is filled if you prefer.
- Fold the bag inside out, halfway around your hand.
- Take a spoonful of frosting and place it inside the bag.
- Continue adding frosting until the bag is filled to the "Fill to Here" mark.
- Unfold plastic bag and gently push the frosting down towards the bottom.
- Twist the bag and hold it in your hand for decorating.
Decorating the cupcakes
This is where the fun begins! Use the grass or star tip and begin pipping the frosting! Be creative and design the monster in any way you'd like!
My favorite is the grass tip that created hair for the monsters. I made some with long hair and some with short. I also made long spaghetti swirls with one long swirling pattern.
It's okay to practice with the frosting before adding it to a cupcake. I pipe it onto a plate to test out the tip. Once done, you can scoop it up and put it back into the bag.
Tips for making Monster Cupcakes
- Keep the bag twisted at the top so the frosting doesn't escape out the top
- Stop from time to time and retwist the bag
- If the frosting becomes too soft, just place in the fridge for a few minutes. It can soften just from the heat of your hand!
- Don't worry if the cupcakes aren't perfect! The imperfections add to the character of the little monsters!
- You can flip the eyes upside down and use for a mouth!
- To swap out a tip, just unscrew the cap on the coupler, remove the tip. Then add a new tip and screw on the cap.
