A fun treat to help celebrate any occasion and a fun treat to make!
My daughter turned 15 last week! I don't know how time seems to fly so quickly, but somehow she really is 15! The teenage years are a whole new world, but one thing has remained constant...her desire to still plan a fun birthday party and a unique birthday cake.
We've had a lot of cakes over these past years; ladybug, butterfly, flower cupcakes, castle, clown cake, Barbie cake, purse, fancy flip flops, topsy turvy cake, and now....Cake Pops!
The last few years Taylor not only helped plan what kind of cake, but she has been able to help make the cake! You are never too old to have a fun birthday cake!
We knew the cake pops would be center stage, but there's not a whole lot of cake in these pops, so we also made cupcakes so everyone could have enough cake. Plus, we needed a place to put the candles!
Cake pops aren't hard to make, but there are a few tips to follow. The kids and I watched this video by Bakerella before starting. Even after watching this video, we had a few flops.
The first picture shows pops that fell off while dipping and the second is a pop that slowly slid down the stick once it was done. The biggest reason for our flops was the cake balls weren't cold enough. We should have popped them back into the fridge to firm up again.
The second reason was the candy cooled and was getting too thick. A quick pop back into the microwave would have solved the problem. We had several flops, but we had more successes and definitely had enough pops!
Cake Pops
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 whole cake (baked and cooled)
- 1 cup frosting
- 48 oz candy coating pieces
- decorating sugars and sprinkles
Instructions
- Crumble cake into a large bowl.
- Mix in frosting. I used my hands.
- Form cake into balls and roll together with hands.
- Place cake balls on baking sheet.
- Place sheet in refrigerator for several hours or in the freezer for 15 minutes.
- In a deep microwave bowl, place candy coating. Melt according to package directions.
- Dip the end of a lollipop stick into the melted candy.
- Insert stick halfway into pop.
- Dip pop into melted candy coating. Do no stir around.
- Lift out and let excess candy drip off.
- Apply sprinkles or colored sugar, if desired.
- Place upright to cool and harden. I used an inverted egg carton, but a Styrofoam block works too.

Happy belated birthday to your daughter! My kids have been begging for cake pops and when they say yours, the begging increased! They look so pretty. You had me laughing out loud with your "flop" descriptions but I think all of the cheerful sprinkles AND cupcakes more than made up for it. Thanks for sharing!
