It’s fresh and crunchy, with just the right balance of sweet and tangy, and a touch of heat from the red pepper flakes.

A Fresh Slaw Without Mayonnaise
I was looking for a fresh, crunchy slaw that didn’t use mayonnaise. I wanted something lighter that still had plenty of flavor, and this Asian slaw was exactly what I had in mind.
The cabbage and sugar snap peas give it plenty of crunch, while the sesame dressing is slightly sweet and tangy with just a touch of heat. It’s an easy side dish that comes together with simple, fresh ingredients.
Key ingredients

- Green and red cabbage - Using both gives the slaw plenty of crunch and color.
- Sugar snap peas - Slice them thinly so they mix easily throughout the slaw.
- Red onion - Adds flavor and another layer of crunch.
- Cilantro - Adds fresh flavor to the slaw.
- Dressing - Olive oil, sesame oil, rice vinegar, honey, ground ginger, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper make a sweet and tangy dressing with a little heat.
- Sesame seeds - Toast the sesame seeds before adding them for extra flavor.
Complete ingredient amounts and instructions are in the recipe card below.
Step-by-step directions

- Combine all dressing ingredients in a jar with a lid. Shake until combined.

- Thinly slice the green and red cabbage and place in a large bowl.
- Add sliced onions, sliced peas, and cilantro.

- Give the dressing another shake, then pour over the slaw. Toss until well combined and evenly coated with the dressing.
- Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds.
- Serve right away or cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Recipe tips
- Slice the vegetables thinly. Thin slices make the slaw easier to toss and help distribute all the vegetables throughout each serving.
- Shake the dressing again before adding it. The dressing may separate while you prepare the vegetables, so give it another good shake just before pouring it over the slaw.
- Toss well. Make sure the cabbage and other vegetables are evenly coated with the dressing.
- Toast the sesame seeds. Toasting brings out more of their flavor.
- Adjust the heat. Use more or less red pepper flakes depending on how much heat you want.
