A bowl filled with peas and finely chopped shallots.

These Buttered Peas are the simplest of recipes, but the results are delicious. And since they use a bag of frozen peas and come together so quickly, they are perfect for any day of the week.

The fastest vegetable for dinner

I like to keep a few bags of frozen veggies in my freezer. They are so easy to pull out for a fast and easy side. Usually, I'll microwave whatever veggie we are having, but sometimes I want to elevate them a bit more, without extra effort.

That's where these easy butter peas come in. They are thrown in the pan while they are still frozen along with some butter and shallots (or garlic) and then cooked over low heat for about 10 minutes. That's it. Easy, peasy and delicious!

Key ingredients

A bowl of frozen peas, shallots, and butter.
  • Peas - Use a bag of frozen peas. Select regular or petite sized peas. Don't thaw before using.
  • Shallot - I use finely chopped shallots in this recipe. Shallots are very mild flavored and don't overpower the peas. You can also use garlic instead of the shallots. If using garlic, use 1-2 finely minced cloves.
  • Butter - Use salted butter in this recipe. For a different taste, you could use olive oil instead of the butter.

How to make buttered peas

A sautee pan butter and shallots.
  1. Melt the butter in a skillet over low heat.
  2. Add the shallots and cook for 2-3 minutes until the shallots begin to soften slightly.
Frozen peas in a saute pan.
  1. Add the frozen peas. Stir to coat with the butter. Place a lid on the pan and cook over low for 3 minutes.
  2. Stir the peas. Place lid on pan and cook for another 3 minutes.
  3. Test the peas. If they are done to your liking, remove from heat. I usually find I need another 2-3 minutes with the lid on.
  4. Serve hot sprinkled with a bit of salt.

Recipe tips

  • Add the peas to the skillet while they are still frozen. No need to thaw first.
  • Keep heat on low. The first three minutes will feel like nothing is happening because the peas were added frozen to the skillet. They are slowly warming up in the pan.
  • Cooking time varies depending on your skillet and your stove. My peas usually take a full 9 minutes to become fully heated through and are slightly softened.
  • Don't overcook or the peas may become shriveled.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make buttered peas ahead of time?

These peas are best served hot off the stove. They come together easily which means you can cook them at the very last minute without too much effort.

Can I reheat leftover buttered peas?

Yes, but heat just until they are heated through. Any longer and the peas begin to shrivel and lose their tenderness.
