Place sugar, berries, and two cups of water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat until it begins to simmer. Simmer for 5-10 minutes until the berries have softened and the water has changed color to a deep reddish color.
2 cups blackberries, 1 cup sugar, 2 cups water
Strain the berries using a fine mesh sieve. Don't mash down the berries in the sieve. This will add pulp to the juice and make your lemonade cloudy. You should have about 2 cups of liquid.
Pour berry juice into a pitcher and add 2 cups of ice to cool it down
2 cups ice
Squeeze lemons and add lemon juice to the cooled berry juice
1 cup lemon juice
Add 4 cups of cold water. Stir, taste, and then pour over a glass of ice and enjoy!
4 cups water
Notes
If you prefer a tart lemonade, reduce the sugar by ¼ of a cup
If not serving right away, don't add additional ice until serving time. The ice will dilute the lemonade.
Store unused lemonade in the refrigerator for 5-7 days
